Welcome back to the Raising Elite Competitors podcast. I'm Coach Bree, a mental performance coach for girl athletes, and I'm so excited that you're here. Whether your daughter is just getting started with the whole sports journey, or you are a seasoned sports parent with multiple seasons under your belt. This is the podcast for you to help you know how to raise. A confident, mentally strong girl athlete. And in today's episode, part of that of raising confident mentally strong athletes is giving them the life skills, specifically the skills that they need to fuel their body appropriately. And that's why I'm excited for today's guest. Her name is Katie Kimball. She is the CEO and founder of. Kitchen stewardship and we are diving into how to help your athlete get the life skill of preparing food that will fuel them properly. I don't know if you're like me as a sports parent, but we're all over the place. It's super busy, and so we go into. Everything in this episode with Katie. Everything from how to prep things for, traveling on the go and what fuel your athlete needs to perform at her best, and also simple ways that you can involve your athlete in the meal prep process so that they can eventually be doing this on their own because isn't that the goal? A little bit about Katie. She helps change kids' relationship to food. Both through Work in the Kitchen and helping parents of picky eaters. She's a former teacher two times TEDx speaker, writer, and mom to four kids. She created the Kids Cook Real Food e-course, which was recommended by the Wall Street Journal as the best online cooking class for kids. Her blog kitchen Stewardship helps families stay healthy without going crazy. And she's on a mission to connect families around healthy food, teach every child to cook and instill these all important lifelong skills. So I know you've got, I've got you excited for this episode, but before I dive into it, I wanna give a shout out to a mom in our community who actually recently joined the Elite Mental Game, which is our signature mental training program for girl athletes to teach athletes. The skills they need to manage pressure to come back from mistakes, to handle the ups and the downs of their sport, to show up confidently. All of those good things that typically were not taught by their coaches, but expected by their coaches. So Dee is the name of this mom. She said this. My biggest takeaway was how much more confident my daughter was in her game Friday night and how she's getting back towards her. Typical self in just one week, and she's getting more confident in school too, as she's always had test anxiety. She's using her visualization in many areas of her life and succeeding. She's going from anxiety and fight or flight to loving and grateful, excited for the journey that lies ahead. So in Dee's situation. Her daughter had gone from this like happy, joyful, like loving her sport, which I know you see your athlete when they first start playing, it's like, you know, they can't get enough of it to starting to experience some anxiety, some pre-game anxiety, also transferring over to other areas of her life. Dee's daughter joined the elite mental game, started learning some simple skills that she can use. Dee said in just one week, she's actually starting to feel better and looking more. Like she was before, like she's loving her sport again, kind of getting back to that confidence. So d I'm really excited for you. Really excited for your daughter and loved getting this message. All right, let's dive into this episode on how you can help your athlete with this life skill of meal prepping, preparing of fueling their bodies appropriately and for performance. So I know you'll enjoy this episode with Katie as much as I enjoyed sitting down with her.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:All right. Welcome Katie to the Raising Elite Competitors podcast.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:So good to be here, Bree. Thanks.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Well, I'm really excited to dive into today's topic because, both of us are raising girl athletes, and I know that the kitchen and food and fuel and nutrition for me is something I'm really passionate about, and I know that you're probably even more passionate about it. So I am super excited to dive into the tips and strategies that you have. But first, can you tell us who you are and what you do?
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Well, I'm a mom of four. I have three boys and one girl, so they're right now, ages 10, 13, 16, and 20. So I met, I call it phase five parenting. We're like, I'm parenting a young adult
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Oh yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:world is totally different. Parenting does not end at 18 as I used to claim. So yeah, it just keeps going. But I'm, I'm a writer. I'm a teacher by trade, and I think it just started when I was pregnant with my first realizing that everybody I ate counted double, and then he was born, oh my gosh. Every bite he ate counted so much and I just fell into food and nutrition and how to nourish our kids. Without freaking out about it, without going crazy. And then just how to balance like your time and your budget and all of the pulls that we have on ourselves as moms and like trying not to screw up our kids by saying the wrong thing about food. You know, it just seems like there's so much pressure. So I've been in the online space since 2009, teaching moms to stay healthy without going crazy. And then about 10 years ago, I realized that we're not passing it on to our kids.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:So as like my teacher heart realized that we are uncomfortable as a generation in the kitchen.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:passing this on to our kids because we're not even comfortable with it. So I thought somebody can step into that gap and I'm that person to help parents teach their kids to cook and really take ownership of their health so that it's not just us telling them what to do, but us talking to them about how they can fuel themselves and, and how they can think about food as just a piece to their health puzzle.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Okay. This is great. There's a lot of different directions we can go in because I've got my mom brain on at the same time as my like coach, and as. Are nourishing athletes, but when you mentioned, you know, the, the things that we say around food too, that's been a huge emphasis just in, in parenting. And like, I've been so aware of like how my mom and my grandma talk about food and not wanting to repeat some of those things. So I'm excited to get into that too. But can we just start with the basics and go with, when it comes to nourishing and fueling. Athletes, what are just some basic things that we need to be keeping in mind as parents to make sure that we're really hitting their nutritional needs as an athlete, which is different than potentially a non-athlete. And then we can go from there.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:For sure, and I mean, I love to talk about nutrition and the macros and
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:But I think as parents, the most important gift we can give our kids athletes or not, is simply that connection in our brains that food impacts the way you feel and that food is fuel for our day. Whether that's a standardized test we're taking, or a match or a game that we're playing, you know it's fueling our brain and our bodies. And I feel like that was not done very well in my childhood. Like even if I had a, a stomach ache after dinner, my parents would say like, oh, go lay down. But it was never, Ooh, let's put our detective hat on and examine what you might've eaten. That isn't agreeing with you. You know what I'm
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:saying Mm-hmm. Yeah. So
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:I think that's what the greatest gift we can give our kids is just helping them examine their own body's connection with food and how it makes you feel, because each person's gonna be different. So I said, I have one girl,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:when she was in fifth grade, we figured out that she's dairy sensitive. She said, mom, I thought everybody had trouble breathing after every gym class. And
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Oh, interesting. Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:It wasn't until, and we do, we do that as a human condition. We think that how we feel is probably normal.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:how everyone feels. So unfortunately that creates strife. Like a lot of us actually deal with a really low level of chronic pain because we think that's how we're supposed to feel.'cause we don't know any differently. So she cut dairy for a month and about two weeks in. She'll say, now, she said, I didn't even wanna tell you mom, because I realized how much better I could breathe.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Oh wow.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:at the top of a flight of stairs,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:just thought everyone was winded

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:she was like, oh no, I'm not gonna be able to eat cheese anymore.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Which is a.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:it was so devastating. Oh, and it's still, you know, now she's 16 and she's still, so often she'll have a little dairy and it really affects her breathing for days. So she's very motivated to keep that out. So, you know, should she have a ton of protein to build muscle, yes. But should it be cheese and milk? Not for her. So that's why I say like, step one is how do we teach our kids, our girls, to listen
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:their bodies and to put that detective hat on and draw some connections. My daughter, I think, because we're always talking about food and how food makes you feel, I'm starting to see the fruits.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:she, this year, she's a junior. And she has identified, and she did this for herself, like this wasn't me, but she said, you know, by third hour if I just have oatmeal for breakfast or if it's like a higher carb breakfast, I'm just dead. She's like, I can't focus. My stomach is starting to growl and everyone is looking at me because, you know, she's a 16-year-old girl. She's like, it's so loud. And I can't focus and I'm starting to get sleepy. So she has started on her own volition, adding protein. every breakfast, regardless of like what the rest of the family is eating. So if it's oatmeal day, like my boys could add milk and at least have some protein there. You know, you could just add a glass of milk. She can't do that. So she'll grab a couple sausages from the freezer

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:satiating. Although I've said it.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:to figure it out for herself by realizing there was a deficit in how she felt. So when it comes to fueling athletes, protein of course is amazing for muscle building and for strength and agility, and then fat is going to be a satiating factor that keeps us full longer. Obviously, carbohydrates are important too. Complex carbohydrates, better than like the simple carbs, the white flour and the white sugar, all because of how they give us energy. How they last longer. So I think that's what we wanna talk to our girls about is what is the quality of this food? What's the satiating factor that's really going to stick with you and give you energy for hours instead of really quick energy?

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:we feel really good. So that's the complex carbs, the protein, and the fat. We definitely don't wanna be afraid of fat because good, healthy fats are what's gonna keep us full longer.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Okay. That's a good kind of foundation. I love what you said about. Them being able to draw connections. And I would also love some, some more examples of that because as a coach now I'm putting on my coach hat. What I see, sometimes happen with athletes is they're not feeling properly throughout the day, and then they go into a two and a half hour, three hour practice with me, and they're feeling fatigued, lightheaded, whatever. They're not having good practice and they don't typically. At first, tie it back to what they ate or fueling, or did they have like a snack before practice? Then they start beating themselves up and then they're like, I had a terrible practice. I suck. I'm going to like bomb in the game tomorrow. You know? And then we're going down this whole like path that they don't actually need to go down. But they don't think necessarily to consider like, did I fuel properly? The rest of the day, did I hydrate all of that? They're like, I suck because I had a bad practice and now I've got this pregame anxiety for tomorrow. Which, you know, it's just one of those other things that we don't maybe consider. So what are some of their examples of how we can help kids, or help our athletes like draw some of those connections, to their body and how they're feeling.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Well, it's awesome to be talking to teens and tweens because their logical brains are beginning to develop, you know, so we can teach them they'll see it in their real life and be like, oh, like coach was right, or mom was right. So if we think about a vehicle, you know, if we don't. Put fuel in our vehicle. Or if we don't change the oil and it stops running on the side of the road, we don't say, well, my car sucks. know? Or if you were to put like, water down your gasoline,'cause you're trying to be cheap and the car is sputtering and, and having a problem, again, we wouldn't say, oh, my car sucks. We would immediately go, wait a minute, what did I put or not put into the

Or like let's examine how you were fueling yourself through the day. Was it quick energy? Was it long energy? You know, did you have enough hydration? That's huge for our athletes. It's not about just hydrating during the game or after the game. Like we need hydration throughout the day. A lot of my kids are actually theater kids,

Like, athletes should be drinking a big glass of water the moment they wake up. And, and I know some people are like, oh, water is boring. I hate doing that. Like, you know what, your practices are really hard too, and you're not always having fun
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Right.

It's not, I don't think it has to be overly complicated.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:what kind of fuel are we putting in what output are we getting out? Hopefully my fingers are always crossed that kids can start to see the correlation. Like, oh, actually I ate like a pastry or donut for breakfast
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:I was super busy and I alm I skipped lunch. You know what I'm saying? And then that they would see. That result in a poor performing practice and start to go, huh? Like maybe mom's right? Or maybe maybe coach is right. And then you experiment on yourself, right? You attempt a high protein breakfast and a really satiating lunch with a nice balance of complex carbs and fat and protein,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:how that day goes.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah, I love that, like an experiment. It, it is amazing though how many athletes don't, don't make that connection. So I think, you know, for parents listening, like, I don't think we can overemphasize, you know, allowing them to realize that like how you fuel and especially like before practice, before competition. I mean, obviously you're building it ahead of time too, but like, you know, going to a practice on empty stomach, like is not gonna set you up to actually play well. So, okay. I do wanna get into some, like, some life skills that we can be developing to help our athletes take more ownership of this, which, you know, it sounds like your daughter is doing that. Like you're seeing the fruits of it, like you said but can you just really quick for the moms listening who are wondering. How do athletes need to feel differently? Like kind of the recommendation that I'm hearing from you is there needs to be a balance of carbs, protein, and fat. They need to be drinking at least a glass of water when they wake up, but how much water kind of throughout the day, I assume three meals, a couple of snacks, but is there any more guidance around that just so we can get a good base?
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Sure, let's start with hydration. And this is gonna be controversial. Like, I don't know if you've heard, you can actually over hydrate to the point of death,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:which is, which is crazy. So like we do have to, we do have to keep this in mind that it's not just about drinking water.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:I. a writer who works for me who's a nutritional therapy practitioner, and she's really big on like making your hydration count more so it's quality in that quantity. And so she teaches how to make like a homemade smart water with electrolytes, and again, not high sugar, not those simple carbs, but something that just maybe has a little lemon or a hint of strawberry or something that tastes good, has some electrolytes, because what that does is takes the water into your cells. Instead of the water, just sort of like going through your body and not really being used. So that, I think that's really important for parents to understand. And again, it's not the artificial sweeteners, it's not the sugar, it's not the Gatorade and all these like artificial colors and everything is, we really want these to be whole natural substances as they're found in nature, if at all possible. And then when it comes to fuel, absolutely multiple snacks throughout the day. I think something to keep in mind is to give your body some time. Between those snacks. So I'm like, I'm terrible at this. I'm a grazer. I'm like a constant just sort of snacker. That's not good for me when we think about how our body works, our digestive system like runs from top to bottom and when the top is working, so when your mouth is chewing and your saliva is starting to predigests your food, your stomach and your intestines actually slow down.'cause they're like, okay, it's the top of the digestive system's turn. And so we need at least 90 minutes. Of downtime. We need 90 minutes of not eating for the food to get from our mouth and sort of through the first level of digestion in the stomach, into the intestines, well before we eat again. So that would be a good rule, like minimum of 90 minutes, especially for teens, up to three hours between these eating opportunities.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Okay. Awesome. All right. That gives a good kind of just idea of what we should be aiming for. Okay. Let's talk about, you mentioned offline around like building. Confidence in the kitchen and resilience in the kitchen and allowing kids to kind of have ownership in that teaches life skills that then transfer to their activities and their relationships and all of this thing. And so we talk about that in the context all the time of like how sports are and performances like theater and, you know, all of those are opportunities for athletes to practice skills in a really good contained environment where they can risk and they can fail. And it just is such a beautiful. Thing for them to be able to do. But you're saying that the kitchen is also an opportunity for this. So can you talk about that? I know that's an area that you're really passionate about.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:I call the kitchen like the best playground, laboratory or arena for teaching just about any skill. So when I think of like the girls in your audience, even those sports are low pressure. They feel high pressure because people are watching you.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:And girls especially are very sensitive to that, that like other people's eyes. And so in the kitchen, like the only risk is your own home. we know that anytime you practice working through failure, anytime you do something hard, anytime you do something valuable. So, I mean, sports have a certain value,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:I would posit that in the kitchen. Like you're literally nourishing other human beings. So it's impossible to say that, that just has like so much value and so much weight to it
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:and kids really feel. Contribution.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:that they, they're doing something valuable, therefore they are valuable. So the amount of self-esteem and confidence that raises in the kitchen and just doing any life skill around the home applies to other areas of life, whether that's academics or social or sports, which is really cool. So I believe that people could be better athletes if they have that well-rounded sense of contribution in the home. And when we talk about ownership of your health. Sure you can take ownership by choosing what to eat, but true ownership has to go to the inception of the meal and being able to prepare your own food. You know, I'm not raising kids just to get them to 18, like I'm raising adults who I wanna be really independent. And I want my kid, like when my kids are adults. Young adults in their twenties. I want them to be like finding the love of their life and figuring out like what their career is gonna be and how they're gonna serve the world. I don't want them to be like, oh my gosh, grocery shopping. What? Like budgeting. I don't know how to run the basics of life. So I figure if I can give them those under my roof, I'm still here to ask questions. They can fail with very little risk. You know, if you fail making a meal, maybe you waste five bucks,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Right. Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:whereas. If you're going out into the world in your career and you're failing, you could be risking thousands of dollars. You know, and so we've gotta give these like stepping stones of opportunities to do hard things, plan ahead, fail, rebound, and grow resilience. So I really think it's, work the kitchen could be like a pregame for the work on the field or on the court, because it's going to help them, see that they are capable of so much.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Yeah. So true. Okay, let's talk about, what's age appropriate for, I mean, there's a difference between helping in the kitchen and like you said, like planning the meal, doing the grocery shopping, like putting things together, not having extra things that you're gonna waste, you know, like. All of that. Can you talk us through what's realistic also with just like the busy lives of our sports parents and our athletes and like what's age appropriate for them to be able to do?
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Great question. I think of all of parenting as a gradual release of responsibility. So there should be a progression from age two to 12, to 16 to 18. you know, with the girls in your audience, we're talking athletes, teens and tweens, they're very capable, obviously, on the field, which means they're equally as capable in the kitchen. So what I would do. Especially if a family hasn't incorporated the kids much in the kitchen, is to really think about skills, not recipes. So if, if I'm a mom and we have this busy schedule and we have all these practices, and I'm like, oh, how am I gonna have my daughter make a whole meal?
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Right.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:is hours of my time that I just don't have. So the idea would be like, how can I help my daughter make sure she's comfortable at the stove and can boil water for pasta?
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:how can I make sure that she can flip pancakes or burgers or salmon patties, at the stove? How can I make sure that she's comfortable cracking eggs like again? So you look at your recipe
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:and that's gonna break down into five to 15 component skills.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:pick one.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Just pick one. When with little kids, I tell parents, just teach'em how to measure the teaspoon of salt.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:do that task and it's a minute and they can add to the meal and then you can compliment them, which raises their self-esteem and they wanna come back for more. So for older kids, I think knife skills are great. I. That's a super beneficial risk that they're doing something that is dangerous, that carries some danger, but that is massively helpful in contributing to the family. So like when we're running late, you know, we might have a soccer practice at six 15 that some kids gotta get to. I'm like, this is not the time to slow down and this a kid a skill, so. So teach your kids skills. the downtime, like well, Saturdays are probably very busy for your people. Maybe a Sunday afternoon, maybe a summer. Like there's gotta be at some point where they're well fed and you're not under a time crunch. That's when you would teach the skill the very first time. And then once the student has the skill, then they can come back in more of the crunch time and practice. So if we're in a big hurry. got four kids. I can be like, you take the cucumber, go to the table and get that cut up. You know, here you take some carrots, go over to this space in the kitchen, everyone can do one little part,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:and the meal comes together with lots of good whole foods and lots of options and raw veggies and salad and all that stuff would've taken me 20 minutes
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Right.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:divided by four. It takes us all like six minutes, you know, so it's super, super helpful. But it's not necessarily the child making the whole meal. Now my kids do make home meals. I think that's the goal to reach for sure. You asked what age? My oldest two, my son and my daughter, Paul and Leah, started making one dinner a week when they were 12 and nine.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Oh, okay.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Uh, my daughter's super capable. She knew how to use a chef's knife at that point, and what the way I did it is they made the same meal every Sunday.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:school year, which was really cool for them because they got in depth mastery
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:of this one skill, and so they didn't have to, know, coming at new things is hard. They didn't have to come at a new recipe every week. So that's the way I chose to do it, is that, I forget actually if it was every week or every other week, they got to work together. Total sibling bonding. It was super cute. They would know like, well, it was homemade pizza. They would put the pizzas in and we have five minutes to play cards.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Oh yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:And then they'd pull the pizzas out and top them and like do the rest. But they just had it like down to the minute because they had such mastery of this homemade pizza recipe and they would cut the vegetables and everything. So I think that to me, that's that gradual release of responsibility. They did the same meal for a year. I. Then the second year, every other week, they would make the old friendly homemade pizza. And on the middle weeks they'd have to plan something else. So then we're building that executive functioning and that planning ahead and trying something new. And now both of them each take a meal a week by themselves and they miss working together. Sometimes. So that's like another really sweet benefit if you do have, multiple kids,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:that if they're working together, it's total bonding because how, how do we bond with people? We do hard stuff, right?
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Great.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:why teams bond so well, because you're working together toward a common goal, doing something hard.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Right. Yeah. Oh, I love that. Like I like that you kind of painted a picture of what it could look like, and that sounds amazing. If like two nights a week I wouldn't, if like my, my son and my daughter eventually are cooking meals and I don't have to do that, that'd be great. And I hope this goes without saying, I know that we primarily work with girl athletes who are saying daughter a lot, but if you have sons, please make sure you're teaching them these skills too.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Yes, yes. Yes.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:not raise these sons who don't know their way around a kitchen and you know, we're just putting it all on the girls, so I hope that's,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Yeah, yeah, yeah. So my son, he just turned 20, but like in his year 18 and 19, he planned some trips, like hiking trips with friends and they would make all their food from scratch'cause they're cheap.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:They didn't wanna go out. But he had the ability to plan grocery shop and make meals for like six guys for an entire weekend.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:That's amazing. Okay, awesome. Because I've seen it way too often where I'm like, why is the woman the only one that knows how to like cook things? This is not, yeah. Anyways, that's a different topic, but, okay. I love this and hopefully it gives kind of a vision of what's possible. I do know that the thought in a lot of sports parents' heads is like. It is so busy though. And I like that you just said like, well, just one day a week, like pick one day a week and that's when we're gonna focus on that meal together or planning that meal. Because a lot of times it is like, I mean, I've got a crock pott going right now because we have like soccer, we have swimming and we're not home until seven o'clock. So we're just doing it easy. But yeah, sometimes it's unrealistic to think it's gonna be seven nights a week. We're making a meal every single night, so. Yeah. I do want to kind of shift a little bit into this area of how we talk about food and body, because there's a lot, I mean, just in social media, I see all the time, like how we're talking about food, how we're talking about our bodies, especially as women and what our kids are picking up is just, just so impactful. So, I know another concern that a lot of parents, including myself have is this eating disorders and are we like, villainizing foods or seeing that good foods or bad foods, or, we know that the foods that are more nourishing and nutrient dense are the ones we should be eating, but. Sometimes there's a line, and especially if you have girls who are in like gymnastics and swimming and like their bodies are on display, it just can be a really slippery soap when it comes to all of that. So I know I don't really have a specific question, but I would love for you just to speak to that.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:I am so glad you came back to this.'cause when you mentioned it at the top, I like tucked it in my brain. Like we gotta talk about the words we use, because it is so, it's so hard. Like my mama heart is right there Again, I only, I only have one girl, but my worries for her with social media and body image are deep,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:you know, they're very intense. So there's sort of a dichotomy. media where there's a big group of people saying we should not use value add words at all, ever on food. Like we should never say bad or good, never say healthy or unhealthy. That we shouldn't create any sort of hierarchy. That all foods are neutral.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.

I, I think that does our girls a disservice. it's not true. We've all had the experience of maybe going out to eat and we just feel heavy and sluggish afterward.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Right.

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.

If I eat a candy bar for breakfast or I eat sausage, eggs and avocado toast, I am going to feel differently. So I don't like that camp.

You know, we, we don't want to constantly be talking about good foods and bad foods and healthy and unhealthy and create a fear
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:or, a fear of body shape.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:I, prefer to live in the middle and say, you know, we can eat, we can get energy from all foods, but. can get better energy, quality, high energy, or long lasting energy from certain foods. So when we talk about, what I might say to an adult is like the empty food or the empty calories, like desserts and sweets and treats, and even pretzels, like those are just, they're white. Flour is
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:energy. If you were, if you needed to survive, great, eat the pretzels. But if you wanna thrive, if you wanna be a high performing athlete. You better hear some protein with those pretzels. And so for me, it's very scientific, the way I talk to my kid. We talk about long lasting energy and how we fuel our bodies. I don't fully restrict anything because I do think restriction causes a rubber band effect where the tighter we pull that restriction, right? You're never allowed to eat X, y, or z. The harder that rubber band will shoot the kids into the snack section as soon as they have their own money or their own driver's license.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:desirable, like what you can't have is so desirable.

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.

So there was automatic. Restriction. And that's where I think like that one camp that's like never talk about good or bad and all foods are equal. Sure
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.

But that's where our culture makes it really, really dangerous to say. Yeah, like cream is exactly the same as unsweetened Greek yogurt. It's not.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm. Right.

So I think, I just think we can be really real with our kids. I think it's great for our girls especially to hear, to say, you know what? I don't know.

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:what the right answer is. I need to do more research. It's really confusing
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:and so that they can see that even as adults, we're still sort of working it out, which comes back to listening to our body. And hopefully our bodies will be saying, you know, this is high quality fuel and this is not. I like to tell my kids that we've got a liver and there to detoxify and our bodies can handle some junk, but there's a limit.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:like, just like when we talk about an athlete, like if you wanna get better at lifting weights or running fast, like you start with what you can do and you add a little bit of weight and then your muscles get bigger or your body gets stronger or faster. And it's kind of the same, like we have a tolerance junk, for sugar, for things that aren't serving our body super well. And so we've just gotta make sure that we're not topping off and overdoing that. Does that make sense? Like.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:like 10, not the ice cream cone and the Starbucks the candy and the pretzels. You know, it's like, let's give our body a little bit of fun, but nourish it really well most of the time.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah, I think that balance is huge. And can you also talk about, as we kind of wrap it up here, I am curious something always in the back of my mind as I'm modeling things for. My kids and modeling my relationship with food, I always kind of fall into, I don't know, I guess your thoughts on how we can best model as parents knowing that they pick up on a lot of what we do. So obviously like nourishing our body, creating meals in the kitchen. I actually have a specific sticking point that I struggle with a little bit and that is, I do like measure my food to make sure I'm eating enough protein and. I always, in the back of my mind, I'm wondering like, is that modeling something inappropriate for my daughter? Seeing me like kind of weigh the protein and make sure that I'm like getting enough? Or is this going to be something that eventually, you can't really answer this, I'm sure like down the road gonna cause some sort of like restriction or thing in her mind where, you know, I'm not intuitively eating and I think, I don't know if this is just something that I struggle with, but I just am hyper aware of like how things look. So I don't know. Can you talk about like modeling and what's appropriate modeling, I guess for our kids?
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:A lot of moms have a struggle with our own relationship with food. You know, I work with parents of picky eaters and moms come in just terrified. They say, Katie, I know that I was raised on like the clean plate club, so I'm prone to overeating because of that, or I know
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:a fear of food and I'm so afraid that that's gonna come across at the table. And it's a valid fear
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:we will pass that on. So I think knowledge is power. examining yourself, your own relationship with food and sort of knowing that that's a potential hangup is gonna get you
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:of the way to the answer,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Right.

You would tell your daughter like, it's not that I'm afraid of food, but I want my body to have the right recipe. have the result I want. And you want elite results.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.

Like dairy for my daughter, obviously, and she's gonna create that restriction for herself'cause it makes her feel terrible. But looking at food, just man, food is fuel if we're starting there, as opposed to food as fear, right? And food as some sort of negative input that will hurt us. You're weighing because you wanna get enough protein,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Mm-hmm.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:you're afraid of something. And to me, that's gonna make all the difference. In what you're passing to your daughter. I mean, I love to celebrate like beautiful plates with lots of colors.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Like we have so many colors on our plate and so I think habits and the routines that we set in our home creates what is normal for our kids. My son works with middle schoolers in a theater program, and so, you know, what do middle schoolers do when they're at an all day program? They get pizza,
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:right? So when my son was in charge the first time. He bought salad, lettuce and carrots and cucumbers and cut that all up and brought it in. And I was like, so proud Mom, melty heart because he just, to him like when we have pizza, you have salad and vegetables too. It's the way the world works. Because that was his normal growing up and he reported that a lot of the middle schoolers. Ate the vegetables too. And he knows, because I'm his mom, to put them first in the buffet line, you know, so there are just such little, little tweaks that if we're really cognizant, intentional appearance, if we put out the vegetables, right? Like think about this. You put out bowl blueberries, or you put out a bowl of m and ms, what's gonna happen? Same thing. The bowl will be empty by the end of the day
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Right. Yeah, true.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:teenagers walking through the kitchen.

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:it's up to us. What we present as our family's normal is going to be knit into the fabric of our kids being as normal. And they might go nuts in college and overeat or eat too much sugar or whatever, but they will return to, I think that normal And you know, for your family, like you guys move your bodies, you have goals, you have performance goals, and then you fuel your body. Well
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:kids' baseline, normal forever.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, that's such a good point. And how we talk about things. I love that too. You know, coming from a place of fear versus like, no, I'm making sure that I'm getting enough'cause I want more muscle. And yeah, I love that. And great example of your son too. I did the same thing with the girls that I coached, we were like on the road on the way to the tournament and we were like, pizza's like the easiest thing. And so like beforehand I cut up like all the veggies and I'm like, I don't know if they're gonna eat this or not, but we will serve it with pizza. And yeah, it was all gone like, okay, we, we don't give'em enough credit. I think like that they actually will eat this stuff.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Totally. Because it's, I mean, it's light and it's refreshing. Like again, especially you're a parent who's like, oh my gosh, I haven't really been doing the vegetable thing. Like, put the vegetables out first because that appetite will make them taste so much better, and they're not competing
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Mm-hmm.

How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Yeah. Yes, they're good. Okay. Well this has been such a great conversation. Um, not your traditional, like, how to fuel as an athlete. I mean, building ownership and life skills around how athletes can be doing this for their sport, but for their life. So thank you so much. I would love for you to share with our listeners where we can find you and any resources that you might have for them.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:Yeah, well, I have a little gift for them. We run a life skills camp every year that serves kids and teens. That's like the best thing I have for the age group where we teach all sorts of life skills. And during the off season when camp isn't open people can still get about four videos to use with their kids. And, and again, just using skills of life, the skills of the household as pregame training for resilience on the field so people can go to kids cook real food.com/elite life skills. That's your special page. And I'm on Instagram at Katie Kimball Kids Cook. So that's where you'll see like, what are the meals my kids are actually making now that they have ownership of their health. That can be kind of fun too.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Coach_Bre-webcam-00h_00m_00s_436ms-StreamYard:Oh yeah. That's such a great idea. I love that. Okay, we'll make sure that we link both of those things in the show notes for easy access. But, thank you again, Katie, for all of your knowledge and just for this wonderful conversation.
How_Teaching_Life_Skills_at_Home_Builds_Mentally_Strong_Athletes_w__Katie_Kimball-Katie_Kimball___Kids_Cook_Real_Food-webcam-00h_00m_00s_531ms-StreamYard:It was really fun to talk to this audience. Like my brain was just buzzing this morning, like, Ooh, how can I talk to elite female athletes? It's so cool.
